Underground quartz deposits worldwide holds a clue about impending earthquakes, a recent study has revealed. It may also give us a reason into the formation of mountains, valleys and plains.

The scientists found a link between quartz deposits and geologic events by using remote sensing technology. They said that the presence of quartz deposits points to a weakness in the earth's crust. This may be the reason for natural disasters like earthquakes or volcanos. Even movements of continents like the continental drift or plate tectonics could be caused by quartz deposits.

This discovery can be a boon to geologists in predicting earthquakes.
