Progesterone Injection Linked to Reduction in Breast Cancer Death Rates

by Rajshri on Dec 15 2009 8:52 PM

A study conducted by the doctors of Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital says that an injection of progesterone can help bring about a 30% reduction in breast cancer death rates. The best part is that this injection costs just Rs 100.

Dr Indraneel Mittra of department of surgical oncology detailed the procedure saying that this was a double-blind trial in which half the participating women were given 500 mg injections of progesterone for four to 14 days before surgery. The 1,000 women in the study were followed up for 65 months.

“The study revealed a four per cent non-significant improvement in disease free survival. And among the high risk group there is a 10 per cent reduction in recurrence and eight per cent reduction in mortality rate. This translates into 30 per cent relative reduction in deaths among those who would have otherwise died,” Dr Mittra said.

The details of the study were presented at the 32nd San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in the US on Saturday
