President Urges Private, Public Units to Intensify Energy Conservation
President Pratibha Patil today urged all private and public sector undertakings to intensify their energy conservation efforts.

Inaugurating the National Energy Conservation Day 2007 here, Patil said: “Today is an important occasion to reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth by using our precious energy resources effectively and efficiently.”

She called upon all individuals, businesses, corporate organisations and government offices to look at their energy consumption patterns and cut out wasteful expenditure of energy.

Observing that energy plays a key role in achieving the goals of sustainable development and poverty eradication, Patil said: “We are faced with the formidable task of meeting the increasing demand for energy. The effort would be three pronged - to enhance supply, use resources available in an optimal and economical manner and on the demand side look at ways to save energy.”

“Technological advances can contribute in large measure to this process,” she added.

Energy efficient equipment should be manufactured both for industrial and domestic use, Patil said, adding that the process of manufacturing should be such that it cuts down on energy consumption at every stage.

She emphasised on creating awareness among the masses that energy is a resource that needs to be used judiciously.

Patil stressed on the need to develop energy efficient vehicles as well as better fuel mixes.

“Effective mass transport systems like metro and bus services should be a priority to reduce the number of single person used vehicles,” she said.
