 ‘Plane’ Facts About Flu
A recent study on emerging infectious diseases pointed out that sitting close to sick passengers on long haul flights can actually spread the infection to other passengers, making them sick and uncomfortable.
Research on this matter showed that sitting within two rows of passengers with flu-like symptoms increases the risk of illness by 3.6% and sitting within two seats of the sick passenger, the chances of flu increased by 7.7%.

It is important that adequate screening be done for patients with flu like symptoms and prevent them from flying till they get better.

Some precautions that passengers can take is to ask for an alternate seat if they are sitting very close to a sick passenger or wear a cotton mask.
