Pharmacy graduates have excellent opportunities in the drug industry in India and abroad said Dr.B.Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India and Vice Chancellor, JSS University, Mysore speaking at the valedictory function of the two day National Conference on 'Emerging trends in pharmacy practice' at Sri Ramachandra University yesterday.
More and more international drug manufacturers are setting up facilities in India to produce medicine at a cheaper cost where trained and experienced pharmacists will be required. Also countries of the erstwhile Soviet Union have decided not to import drugs from outside their region after 2020. They are asking Indian drug manufacturers to set up units in their countries to manufacture drugs required by them cheaper than the imported cost. Indian pharma graduates have very good opportunities there but they should learn at least one of the major international languages or language of that region, Dr.Suresh said.
AdvertisementPharma graduates have also good scope for appointment as pharmaco vigilance officers in the 44 P.V Centres that are being set up in medical colleges and hospitals in the country under the Pharmaco Vigilance Policy of India at a cost of Rs.150 crore rupees where medicine safety and drug reactions will be recorded. Government proposes to increase it to 100 centres in the next one year, he said.
Pharmacy practice is also becoming increasingly specialized and the day is not far off when we will have separate pharmacists for cardiology, nephrology, neurology and other specialties Dr.Suresh added.
Earlier speaking at the conference Dr.S.P.Thyagarajan, Pro Chancellor (Research), said that Sri Ramachandra University has become Regional Surveillance Centre for bacterial diseases headed by Dr.Uma Shankar and Regional Surveillance Centre for fungal diseases headed by Dr.Anupama. Mr.Vaidi Subramanaiam was felicitated at the conference for his 25 years of service as pharmacist in Sri Ramachandra University.
