Pete Doherty Gets a Rehab or Jail Ultimatum

by VR Sreeraman on Jul 4 2007 5:03 PM

Singer Pete Doherty has been given an ultimatum; that he will face jail if he doesn't undergo rehab to deal with his drug abuse.

The Babyshambles frontman pleaded guilty to possessing quantities of crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine as well as two driving offenses at a hearing in London on July 3.

Judge Davinder Lachhar told Doherty that he would only steer clear of jail if he enters rehab before August 7, when he is due to be sentenced.

"If you go to this place to have detox and take advantage of it then we will see what sentence is appropriate when you next come. But if you do not I can tell you now that you will go into custody," The Sun quoted District Judge Davinder Lachhar, as stating in the courtroom.

Speaking to reporters outside court, Doherty, who is currently dating supermodel Kate Moss, said that this ruling pushed his already thought-out rehab plans.

"I have got no choice, have I. It's rehab or jail. I was going to rehab anyway to be honest with you - this is just a little push," Doherty said.

Judge Lachhar said that she decided to give Doherty another chance, after learning that he had been offered the chance to undergo rehab in Harrogate, northern England, later this month.
