Pak Leader Blames Indian Movies for Spoiling Youth, Culture

by VR Sreeraman on Aug 15 2009 10:09 AM

Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid) (PML-Q) leader, Bushra Rehman has blamed Bollywood for spoiling the youth in the country.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Rehman said cable operators and certain television channels are telecasting Indian movies which is affecting the culture of the country adversely.

"Indian movies were being telecast by certain private media channels as well as the cable operators. This not only promoted the Indian culture but was also spoiling the youth," Rehman said.

Responding to the allegations, Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the government would take action against those channels telecasting Indian and foreign movies provided that the House orders it to do so.

Kaira said the government had given permission to the cable operators to show movies only on Computer Discs (CDs), and had not allowed airing of Indian movies.

"The permission given to the cable operators later became part of the policy and now they say they will move the court if the government issues them notices for telecasting foreign movies or CD channels," Kaira added.

Kaira stressed that the government believed in the freedom of media, and asked the television channels to follow a self made code of conduct.

"The government believes in freedom of media as it has played a great role in strengthening democracy in the country and formulating positive public opinion in war against terror, however the media should devise its own code of conduct which it should follow," The Nation quoted Kaira, as saying.
