With a number of petitions pending in front of the Karnataka High Court regarding the launch of a geriatric medicine course, the state government revealed that such a post graduate course will be launched starting from the next academic year.
A number of petitions were filed at the division bench comprising chief justice JS Khehar and justice AS Bopanna asking for the introduction of such a course at a post graduate level. Geriatrics is a branch of medicine which deals with professional care for elderly people.
The government had sent a number of senior officials from the health department and acted on their advice to start a geriatrics course from next year. The government's move was submitted to the bench by its advocate.
"Recently, the Medical Council of India had approved the post-graduate course in geriatrics. The state government will seek approval from the Medical Council to initiate the post-graduate course in geriatrics in 10 colleges in the state before the commencement of the academic year in July-August 2011. In case the proposal made by the state government is approved, the PC geriatrics course will begin in the next academic year", the statement said.
