Outrage as Cancer Nurse Reportedly Bedded Husbands of Patients

by Rajshri on Mar 13 2010 9:06 PM

Macmillan nurse Sara Dale apparently cared for three cancer victims and then bedded their husbands after the patients died. The incident, reported by The Sun, has caused widespread outrage in the country and has brought ethics under the scanner.

Ms Dale met the three bereaved husbands as part of her job at the Queen Elizabeth NHS Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

"Sara was a very popular member of the team at the hospital. When the allegations surfaced people were genuinely shocked," The Sun quoted an NHS source as saying. "Macmillan nurses do an amazing job in supporting cancer patients day in day out. And this is a really unfortunate episode." Dale is currently staying with Stephen Ellis, whose partner Mel succumbed to cancer last year.

The whole issue will be heard before the Nursing and Midwifery Council's conduct committee. Dale was fired in January and could be struck off the register if the committee so decides.
