The influential consumer watchdog, Which? has raised the question that when organic vegetables are less tasty and contain fewer nutrients than normal produce, why should consumers pay more for them.

In its two-year study, a small-trial one, Which? Gardening had supposedly discovered that normal tomatoes were sweeter and juicier than organically grown ones, ordinary broccoli had a higher level of antioxidants than the organic kind, and conventional potatoes had a higher level of vitamin C. Why this difference exists is still not determined although there is a speculation that the standard manure helps the soil maintain water better and release nutrients more slowly, when compared to the peat-free organic soil.

Another study by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2009, authorized by the Food Standards Authority, established that there were no notable differences in the nutrition value between organic and standard food. So the conclusion drawn was that there was very little rationale in buying expensive, organic food.

This has seriously affected the sales of organically grown foods since consumers were more attracted to the idea of superior taste rather than the ethics of not using pesticides. Now, with these studies that idea has collapsed.

Also, the recession has been another reason to cut back on consuming these expensive produce.  The Soil Association disclosed that during 2009 home delivery organic vegetable and fruit boxes saw a 9.8 per cent slump, while sales of organic goods in supermarkets fell by 12.2 per cent, and in farm shops and health food outlets by 17.7 per cent. Even the Prince of Wales, a principal advocate of organically grown foods, has been affected as his company, Duchy Originals, has had its turnover halved and has gone through a loss of Ł3.3 million.

Yet, Which? Gardening has been criticized for not focusing on the most important reason for going organic - the harmful effects of pesticides were negated with organic farming. Editor Ceri Thomas does admit that the trial did not consider this important aspect and seems to concede that, "Whatever methods you use, any gardener will tell you that homegrown fruit and veg beat supermarket fare hands down."

Emma Hockridge, head of policy at the Soil Association has commented that it has been irresponsible of the watchdog not to take into consideration the impact of pesticides on living organisms besides the expense of clearing the poison from the system.

"It is a much wider issue than just taste and health," comments the Association.

It is important to recognize that the findings of the Which? Gardening study are based on organic gardening, which is not the same as certified organic farming. As the article itself notes, “Gardening organically and farming organically are very different. There are strict rules for farmers; they can, for example, only add fertilizers to their soil if tests prove that it is lacking in nutrients, and if they state that they farm organically they must have certification from an appropriate body to prove it. Gardeners, of course, face no such restrictions.” As such, the results of the study should not be construed to reflect the nutritional quality or the taste of products produced from certified organic farming. It is also worth noting that the differences between the organic and non-organic produce examined in the Which? study were small. For example, researchers "couldn’t distinguish any real difference in taste” between the organic and non-organic calabrese or the two types of potatoes being examined. At the same time, they found “there was no difference in quality” between the organic and non-organic tomatoes. The study also revealed that the produce raised organically exhibited several positive characteristics. The organic potatoes, for example, had slightly less scab and cracking than their non-organic counterparts. At the same time, the organic calabrese was more uniform in color than the calabrese raised using non-organic methods. Together, these findings illustrate that, at best, more research needs to be done before concluding which method of gardening, organic or non-organic, yields the most flavorful and nutritious produce.
