Family members have donated organs of a young engineer who was declared
brain dead due to a serious coronary artery disease. Their noble deed gave a
fresh lease of life to 8 needy patients.
The deceased, S. Govindaraj, 27, was working with KSK Mahanadi
Power Company Limited, Hyderabad. On 24th
January he was admitted to
Yashoda Hospital after he complained of severe chest pain. He was diagnosed of
serious coronary artery disease after a coronary angiogram was done. While still
under medication in the intensive care unit (ICU), doctors said that he did not
respond to the treatment from the next day itself and was declared brain dead
January. His father Mr. S. Govindaraj, an auto driver in
Chennai, informed the doctors at the hospital about his son's wish to donate
his eyes. The hospital authorities contacted Mohan Foundation. This NGO
motivated Govindaraj's family to donate his other organs also. After some
initial reluctance the family agreed to do so. The body of the deceased was
shifted to Global Hospital where the doctors made arrangements to retrieve
liver, kidneys, heart valves and eyes.
Mr. Sukumar said, "I am happy that my son, despite passing away,
has given a fresh lease of life to needy patients. He will continue to live."
