Organ Donation Gives New Lease Of Life

by Medindia Content Team on Oct 5 2007 3:34 PM

A heart warming gesture from Mr. Kanakaiah, retired employee in Singareni Colleries, by donating the organs of his 53 year old wife. She was declared brain dead in a city hospital on wednesday night. This could very well serve as an example for many others to follow.

Mr Kanakaiah was heart broken with the news that his wife was admitted to the Poulomi hospital at Sainikpuri on 30th September 2007, due to unconsciousness. Upon investigation it was found out to be an irreversible brain damage. Anxious and confused by the medical jargon, all that Kanakaiah could gather by 3rd October night was that his wife would never come back from the coma that she had slipped into. On 3rd October night, doctors confirmed that his wife was brain dead. That was when Mr Raghuram of Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) met Kanakaiah and his two sons.

When the family was counselled about how she could give fresh lease of life to several others, they agreed to donate her organs. The body was then shifted to KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad for retrieving.

KIMS and Apollo hospitals shared kidneys, the liver went to Global, eyes to lvpei.

In this year alone MOHAN Foundation, Hyderabad have done fifteen cadaveric donations and distributed 63 organs and tissues so far (28 kidneys, 10 livers, 3 hearts, 22 eyes).

GIVE LIFE, LIVE ON........
