Now Australian Schoolies can Get Free Condoms Via SMS

by VR Sreeraman on Nov 9 2008 10:17 AM

In a move to encourage safe sex practices during the celebrations of Schoolies, a health care group has launched a sexual health campaign where youngsters have to just send a text message to get free condoms.

Health care group Marie Stopes International has launched the campaign called, TXT 4 Free Condomz.

With the service, cell phone users will be sent two free condoms in plain packaging when they text their name and address details to 19 SEXTXT.

According to Marie Stopes International general manager, Jill Michelson, the party atmosphere gives a boost to teenagers indulging in risky sexual practices.

"This initiative overcomes both the embarrassment and the cost issue of buying condoms, and does so using a medium and language that resonates with youth," The Courier Mail quoted Michelson as saying.

The results of the research commissioned by Marie Stopes International indicated that 61 per cent of teenagers rated their knowledge of sexual health issues as good or excellent.

Almost half of the teenagers were not aware that they could be infected with Chlamydia but have no symptoms.

Around 30 per cent were unaware whether they could contract sexually transmitted infections from oral sex and more than half thought that by using a condom, they would not contract herpes.
