No Threat from Superbug for Foreign Patients, Say Doctors

Dismissing fears of the negative impact of the “superbug” report published in the British media, a number of hospitals in Gujarat have claimed that it will not affect the inflow of foreigners getting treatment in the country.

A new report published in a British scientific journal Lancet claimed that the newest form of superbug that is resistant to almost all medicines originated in India. Critics of the report see it as a way of undermining the booming medical tourism in India which is growing at an annual rate of more than 30 percent.

MRSA infection is the most dreaded hospital or community acquired infection that can become life-threatening.

However Dr Prafull Pawar of Apollo Hospital in Gujarat said that he expects people coming from a foreign countries including USA and Britain to treat the report in a sensible fashion rather than taking an alarmist approach.

“We need to take the news of superbug with an approach that is more corrective than alarmist. It is not that the superbug news will stop people from the UK or US from coming to India for treatment. There have been MRSA and other difficult bugs prevalent in UK as well”, he added.
