No other information on the case was released, but The New York Times, citing health department officials, said the woman had underlying health conditions.

The city's first fatality from the virus, assistant school principal Mitchell Wiener, also succumbed to the flu after complications from other health conditions.

According to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures released Friday, the United States before the second New York death had recorded nine fatalities and confirmed the virus in 6,552 cases.

The rate of infection may be increasing in New York, with health officials telling the Times that the number of swine flu cases being treated in hospital jumped in recent days to 94 on Sunday, compared to 68 on Saturday and 57 on Friday.

Health department spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti told CBS News there are currently 280 confirmed cases of swine flu in the city. Officials warn that chronic health conditions such as diabetes and compromised immune systems appear to put people at greater risk from the virus.

More than 12,000 swine flu infections have been confirmed across 43 countries since the virus emerged in the Americas a month ago, according to the most recent World Health Organisation statistics.
