Stevie Caffrey, a twenty-year old mother went into a medically-induced coma, and awoke a month later not knowing that she had a boyfriend, and more importantly, a new-born baby.
Ten days after giving birth, Caffrey's heart and kidneys began to fail and doctors induced her into a coma, to save her life. The medication that was given to her affected her memory and she forgot everything, even walking.
When she was told by her nurse about her baby, she denied that she had a child. He boyfriend, Andy Stafford and her father, Lyndon Caffrey tried to get her to remember. It took her some days for her to call to mind details, including giving birth to a baby girl.
For Stafford, her boyfriend, it was a horrendous experience, as she was shifted from hospital to hospital and he watched her swelling up right in front of his eyes.
A police escort accompanied her finally to Wythenshawe Hospital, in Manchester, where she went through a heart surgery. Doctors have given her a portable monitor that measures her heart rhythm and they hope she will remain stable and will not need a heart transplant for some time.
Right now, she holds her little daughter, Maisie in her arms and says, 'She is my baby - how was I going to feel if she called anyone else Mummy?'
