Claiming that the move will result in a better system for caring of patients, British Health Secretary Andrew Lansley defended the penalties that would be imposed on hospitals if patients are readmitted as emergency case within 30 days of being discharged

According to the current system, hospitals can ask to be paid again if a patient is brought back as an emergency case soon after being discharged. With the number of such readmissions rising by more than 50 percent, Lansley said that the move will make sure that hospitals will release the patients only after completing the full treatment.

"What we escape from is the perverse situation at the moment where a hospital might discharge patients too early - and we have seen a 50% increase in the number of emergency readmissions - and then when the patient comes back as an emergency, the hospital gets paid again", he added.
