Two babies born at The St John of God Hospital in Geelong, got interchanged in their cribs and were given to the wrong mothers for breast feeding.

This has been confirmed by the hospital's Chief Executive.  The babies had been taken from the special care nursery for feeding and a mix up probably occurred when the name bracelet wasn't checked and they were placed in the wrong cots.

The hospital is deeply apologetic. Family members are undergoing counseling.
