Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine analyzed the risks and benefits of six different oral drugs available in the market and found that not only does metformin has fewer side effects, but it is also cheaper than the other drugs available.

Apart from metformin, researchers also looked at the effects of sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, meglitinides, DPP-4 inhibitors, and GLP-1 receptor agonists in 166 different studies.

"Although the long-term benefits and harms of diabetes medications remains unclear, the evidence supports the use of metformin as a first-line agent", lead researcher Wendy Bennett said.

Metformin is the drug of choice in the treatment of diabetes. Most of my family members who have diabetes have been prescribed this drug bu their doctors. It is cheaper compared to other anti-diabetic drugs.
