A major study looking into the link between diet and heart disease has found that those who eat traditional Mediterranean diet have a lower risk of suffering from heart disease compared to others.
Researchers from the Harokopio University of Athens studied more than 50 academic papers relating to similar studies which included more than half a million people and found that those who ate traditional Greek or Italian food had a lower risk of developing heart disease.
AdvertisementAccording to the report, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the researchers wrote that Mediterranean diet provided a number of beneficial effects in reducing the metabolic syndrome and thereby reducing the risk of obesity or cholesterol, two major causes of heart disease.
"Our results add to the existing knowledge, and further demonstrate the protective role and the significance that lifestyle factors, and mainly dietary habits, have when it comes to the development and progression of the metabolic syndrome", the researchers said.
