A wife who is five years younger than her husband and intelligent too, is a potent ingredient for a lasting marriage, according to scientists from the Bath University.

The chances are very bright for the marriage if the wife is both young and smart. The chances went up several notches if the couple were never divorced in the past.

These findings have been reported in the European Journal of Operational Research following a detailed study of more than 1500 couples, either in a serious relationship or married.

On the same breath, the finding revealed that the chances of divorce went up more than three times if the wife was five or more years older than her husband as compared to same age couples.

According to Dr Emmanuel Fragniere and colleagues, men and women are driven by physical attractiveness, love, common interests and attitudes. Instead, if objective factors such as age and education were considered for marriage, it could impact the rates of divorce positively.
