Man Sues ITC for Rs 1 Crore Over Cancer

by Rajshri on Dec 3 2009 9:11 PM

One of India’s major tobacco manufacturer ITC Ltd has been taken to court by a Mumbai based custom official who has filed a law suit against the company for not warning him of dangers of smoking.

Deepak Kumar, a Commissioner of Customs & Central Excise in Mumbai, was hooked to smoking nearly 30 years ago. The 59-year old has said that cigarette packs during that time did not display any warnings regarding the ill effects of smoking and though he has tried to ditch the habit more than one time, he has been unable to do so.

Kumar is suffering from a throat cancer and has already lost his ability to speak after his larynx was removed during surgery. Kumar revealed that he will be filing a petition with the Maharashtra State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission against the company asking for Rs 1 crore in compensation.
