Majority of Women in Ahmedabad Ignorant About Cervical Cancer

by Kathy Jones on Sep 21 2010 9:13 PM

Around 90% of women in Ahmedabad are not aware of the dangers posed by cervical cancer, a survey by American Cancer Society (ACS) has found.

ACS is working along with Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GC&RI), CBCC, Ahmedabad Obstetrics & Gynecological Society (AOGS) and Karuna Kare Foundation (KKF) to promote awareness of the disease in the country and to encourage early detection of the cancer.

"There is a global burden of cancer upon us and in order to wipe this out, a constant communication between the general physician and patient is required. This is the best way to generate more awareness about the same, thereby, reducing the number of women affected by cervical cancer,” Dr Ravi Patel ACS volunteer and founder owner of the Comprehensive Blood & Cancer Centers (CBCC) USA told the DNA.

Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. It is estimated that 73,000 women in India die every year of cervical cancer.
