A poll by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has warned that women going in for breast enhancement using the injectable filler Macrolane face many complications.

The survey found that many plastic surgeons were dealing with complications caused by the filler, which is manufactured by the firm Q-Med.

38% of surgeons surveyed admitted they had seen one to three patients who had complications after receiving the facial filler, while 96% said it should be declared as a medicine rather than a medical device, which makes it subject to the CE standards in the UK.

"The public must remember that just because they are non-surgical treatments, it doesn't mean they're non-medical and as such should always be administered by properly trained and qualified practitioners," said Nigel Mercer, president of BAAPS.
