Kolkata Kids’ Initiative to Make the City Clean and Green Ahead of Xmas

by Medindia Content Team on Dec 19 2007 7:17 PM

Children in the ‘City of Joy’, Kolkata, took part in a unique initiative to welcome X-Mass and new year in a cleaner greener and mosquito free city.

In a goodwill gesture, some children dressed up as Santa Claus took up broomsticks and had swept a portion of Manohar Pukur Road.

There is no doubt in this Christmas the city of Kolkata would look ten times smarter than earlier with hi-fi shopping malls and sky-scrappers, however, this total makeover has come at the cost of city’s greenery.

Real estate developers are cutting trees indiscriminately and without following the existing rule of planting at least five trees while cutting a full grown tree.

Earlier, Kolkata was one of those green places in India but now the situation has been reverted courtesy real estate developers. As children are the most sensitive section in the society the campaign for a cleaner city started with them. As they were dressed as Santa Claus with broomsticks in hand they could attract many eyes to their mission easily  . Many people gathered in the area to see the campaign.

Organizer, Launcher Z, of the campaign felt that it was urgent to launch such a campaign because increasing number of dengue and malaria only portrayed Kolkata in bad light and it also leaves scar on city’s face.
