Former president APJ Abdul Kalam has called on doctors to treat patients with a smile.

“The patient is the most important person in the hospital, ensure that when he comes inside, all the medical and para-medical staff greet him with a smile; this reassures the patient,” the former President said. He was speaking at the inauguration of the mobile dialysis facility set up by Manipal Hospital, Bangalore.

He also said that hospital authorities should think about extending their facilities to rural areas. “The 108 mobile ambulance concept under the Arogya Kavacha scheme is a huge success in Karnataka,” he said.

He also recommended that doctors must play an active role in spreading awareness about kidney diseases and ways to prevent them so that costly treatments like dialysis and transplant could be avoid.
