Jordanian Surgeon Accidentally Cuts Off Patient's Testicle!

by VR Sreeraman on Apr 21 2010 2:52 PM

A Jordanian doctor is said to have accidentally cut off a patient's right testicle while removing a cyst from the organ in a routine operation.

The Fitness to Practise panel, a medical tribunal, was told by stunned nurses that on realising his mistake, Dr Sulieman Al Hourani, 36, held the gonad in his hand and looked "surprised".

"The staff's impression was that he had done it by accident," the Sun quoted counsel Sarah Pritchard, for the General Medical Council, as saying.

Despite the blunder, Al Hourani was allowed to continue working at Fairfield Hospital in Bury, Lancs, as a surgical locum and registrar.

He had previously been investigated for injecting himself with a patient's sedative drug, and was dismissed only after being accused of stealing two boxes of painkiller dihydrocodeine.

Al Hourani is accused of misconduct over the operation error, and drugs charges.

The panel heard he has now returned home to practise medicine at the University of Jordan. The hearing continues.
