Bethany Jordan is suffering from a rare disease called the Ivermark Syndrome. She has five spleens and a back to front liver as well as a right lung that is actually shaped like the left one.

Called the 'Jigsaw Kid', Bethany was not expected to survive at birth, but has stunned doctors by staying relatively healthy for six years.

"No two children who have this condition would be alike, but treatment for Bethany's syndrome is getting better and better," says Dr Patrick McKiernan, a liver consultant at Birmingham Children's Hospital, where Bethany is being treated. "She will eventually-need a liver transplant but at the moment we are just waiting to see when that will be."

Doctors had told Mrs Jordan that Bethany could be brain-damaged and asked her to consider terminating the pregnancy. But when it emerged that Bethany's brain was intact, Mrs Jordan chose to give birth.

Bethany will undoubtedly have problems in later life. But at the moment her family is determined to treasure every moment she spends with them.
