Jewellery Restrictions Imposed on Female Doctors and Nurses in Lahore
The Lahore District Health Department has directed all the government hospitals to stop their doctors and nurses from wearing jewellery during duty hours.

Dr Inamul Haq, the Executive District Officer (health), said concerned officials have been asked to implement the instructions immediately.

Apart from posing a security threat, the medical code of conduct does not allow female staff to wear jewellery on hospital premises, Haq added.

"These women are compromising the security of everyone," the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.

This decision was taken after some unidentified men struck Model Town Hospital on September 26 and snatched jewellery from a female doctor and a couple of female patients, Haq said.

"The female doctor hid one of her bangles in a bin under her table. The robbers asked her where the fourth bangle was, which means they had an eye on her outside the hospital as well," he added.

Several female doctors said that rather than imposing such law, the authorities should improve law and order.

A female doctor from DHQ-1 Hospital said, "Issuing such instructions does not make any sense. Security at hospitals needs to be increased and metal detectors need to be set up at entrances."

"Even if female doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff are stopped from wearing jewellery, how will the administrations stop female patients or their female visitors from wearing it?," she added.

An unarmed watchman or gatekeeper was no match for thieves armed with automatic weapons, she added.
