Hyderabad’s Would-Be Dentists Not Smiling
Striking students of the Government Dental College, Afzalgunj have upped their protests to threats of suicide, in agitation against principal P Kamala Devi.

Nearly 43 students of the college have been on an indefinite hunger strike for the last three days. The students have been protesting since August 22. They seek the immediate removal of Kamala Devi, whom they accuse of harassment and preferential treatment.

The students seem to be very serious in the fight for their cause. A group of them managed to grab the attention of chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at the inaugural function of the Nalgonda crossroads flyover. Holding placards requesting the chief minister to 'spare one minute' to hear their problems, the students blocked the chief minister's convoy as he headed towards Saroornagar after the inaugural.

After listening to their problem, the chief minister assured them that an inquiry would be ordered into the matter and action taken against the principal.

Apparently not satisfied with the reply, nearly 43 students locked themselves up in a room on the third floor of the college. They were reportedly carrying tins of kerosene with them, threatening to set themselves ablaze.

Meanwhile, another group of students have blocked the way of the police from attempting to reach the third floor to persuade the students. As of now, the students are still locked up in the room while the management is holding talks with student leaders.
