Researchers in the Netherlands have revealed that repetitive household tasks may prove harmful to pregnant women as they may give birth prematurely.

However the study did reinforce the premise that exercise was good, both for the mother as well as her unborn child. The study quizzed 12,000 new moms about their exercise regimen when pregnant as well as house hold chores and job responsibilities.  The results showed that the mentally tiring chores around the house increased the chance of premature birth by 25%.

"Women who are healthy and do not have pregnancy complications should not restrict their activities in order to achieve a better pregnancy outcome. They may safely continue their normal daily physical activities, including strenuous activities like jogging, squash and weight training even until late in pregnancy," said lead researcher  Hajo Wildschut of Erasmus University.

The details of the study appear in the  Perinatal Epidemiology  journal.
