High Suicide Rate Highlighted by Campaign

by Rajashri on Sep 7 2009 8:47 PM

A new campaign launched by Choose Life in Scotland aims to create awareness about the high rates of suicide in the country. Suicide Prevention Week is being launched with the theme "Suicide. Don't hide it. Talk about it."

"Suicide is a complex issue - there is no single reason why someone takes their own life. What we can say unequivocally is that every death from suicide is a tragedy," said Shona Robison, minister for public health. "Suicide Prevention Week is a great opportunity to reflect on the devastation suicide causes to families and to remember that we can all make a difference simply by offering a willingness to talk and listen to people in distress."

Men are the ones involved in three-quarters of suicides in the country, so the campaign will especially target young, vulnerable men.

The core aim of the campaign is to make it easier for people to talk about feeling suicidal and having thoughts about ending their lives and thus relieve their stress.
