Granny Denied Booze for Being Underage!

by VR Sreeraman on Nov 14 2007 7:01 PM

When 47-year old grandmother Tina MacNaughton-Jones went to buy a bottle of red wine, she never expected to be turned down because she couldn’t prove she was over 18 – but that’s exactly what happened.

Ms MacNaughton-Jones admits that at first she thought that the checkout assistant was joking when she was asked for identification at the Waitrose store.

When she couldn’t produce any ID, her 22-year old daughter Fiona stepped in to buy the bottle by showing the assistant her own identification.

However, Fiona too was refused service in case she gave the wine to her mother.

“It really threw me. The lady said ’You should be flattered’. I said to her ’Are you having laugh?’ People say I look young for my age, but I don’t look young enough not to be served alcohol,” the Sun quoted her, as saying.

The store, left red-faced by the incident, has now apologised to Ms MacNaughton-Jones.

“As a responsible retailer, we work hard to ensure we only sell alcohol to those who are entitled to buy it,” a spokesperson said.

“However, on this occasion it appears we were a little overzealous and apologise for any embarrassment caused.”
