Government Will Call for Health Warnings on Wine, Beer and Spirits

by Rajshri on Feb 15 2010 6:49 PM

New government plans to be published on Monday will call for health warnings to be displayed on bottles of beer, wine and spirits. The warnings will include five essential health information tips and will also display the logo of the charity Drink Aware.

Information on the bottle will include the number of alcohol units contained in the bottle and will also ask buyers to drink responsibly. The consultation report due to be released today will also call on all brewers and distillers to publish health information on all bottles and cans of wine, beer and spirits.

They can either do so voluntarily, be asked by the regulator Portman Group or be forced by law to publish health information.

“We have now received assurances to comply from most of the major manufacturers and retailers. I invite the industry as a whole to deliver on these assurances," said Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary.

Latest data indicates that 10 million people in England are risking their health by drinking too much.
