Going Strong at 102

by Savitha C Muppala on Nov 10 2009 6:21 PM

Shiubalaka Singh's is 102 and is unbelievably healthy with normal blood pressure, perfect vision, a very healthy heart, and normal blood sugar.

This resident of Burdwan has never got a lipid profile done or his blood pressure checked until last month when he started passing blood in his urine. He was diagnosed with a condition called ‘hematuria'. His urinary bladder was washed a number of times which did not prove very effective.

According to Dr Partha Pratim Sen of Howrah's West Bank Hospital, the case was most interesting due to the advanced age of the patient and contrasting good health.

A surgery was conducted on Thursday and a tumour was removed from his urinary tract. The patient showed tremendous improvement and he was completely fine two days after the surgery.

According to his family members, Singh was earlier employed with Coal India. They were not surprised with his speedy recovery as they have been a witness to his discipline and positive spirit. His healthy lifestyle and good eating habits were the secret to his good health and longevity.

"He still walks to the market every morning, where he has tea, reads the newspaper and strolls around. He returns home for lunch and goes out for a walk after a short siesta. He doesn't need glasses or even a walking stick. He does not drink or smoke he never has. And he gave up meat and fish the day he turned 60,” said his 54-year-old son Kuber.

No wonder he is still raring to go at 102.
