Chidipalli Damodar (30), a lecturer in a private college, is still absconding after the incident.

In full public view, Damodar whipped out a bottle of acid and flung it at the girl while she was proceeding to her college in an auto, at Gandhinagar junction. In anguish, she collapsed on the road with severe burns on her face and eyes. The auto driver rushed Kalpana to a local government hospital and alerted the police about the attack.

Though her burns are serious, doctors say Kalpana is out of danger. Police are on the lookout for the accused who fled after the attack.

The lecturer, a native of Yerramukku village in Sompeta mandal, had been stalking Kalpana for some time. "He probably attacked her because of her rejection," a police official informed.

Damodar had been trying to court Kalpana since 2002 while she was undertaking her ninth grade. A native of Akkupalli village in Palasa, Kalpana had come to study in a private school where her uncle worked as a physics teacher, when she was first pursued by the accused.

In spite of repeated rebuffs, Damodar kept on with his efforts. "He kept harassing my niece to marry him, but our family has never accepted him. We warned him to keep away, but he once attempted suicide by drinking some poison. The latest episode has come as a shock. It has been a traumatic experience for us," Kalpana's uncle K Madhava Rao was quoted.
