Opting for a diet that is rich in flavonoids can help reduce the risk of heart disease in women suffering from Type II diabetes, a new study published in the journal Diabetes Care.
The study was funded by Diabetes UK and involved over 93 women suffering from Type II diabetes. Researchers from University of East Anglia divided the volunteers into two groups, the first group receiving flavonoid-enriched chocolate while the second group was given placebo chocolate bars.
At the end of a decade, the researchers found that those who had taken flavonoid-enriched chocolate had a 3.4 percent lower risk of suffering from heart disease compared to the other group. Resistance to insulin, cholesterol and the risk of stroke was also reduced among the first group.
Stating that the results were significant for women with Type II diabetes, lead researcher Prof Aedin Cassidy said, "These results are significant from a public health perspective because they provide further concrete evidence that diet has a beneficial clinical effect over and above conventional drug treatment."
