First Cochlear Transplant Under New Scheme in TN

9-year-old Shabana Azmi has become the first person to undergo a cochlear transplant under the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme in Tamil Nadu. The girl underwent the procedure at the Government General Hospital in Chennai.

The total cost of the procedure is Rs 5 lakh of which Rs 1 lakh is to be contributed by the insurance scheme, while the rest will be paid by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC).

Prakasham, managing director, Star Insurance, said his company would put up Rs 1 lakh for all such surgeries at hospitals in the state provided they met certain criteria.

Dr Balakumar, who performed the surgery, said Shabana was doing well and would now undergo rehabilitative speech therapy at the hospital.
