Fire Retardant Chemical Found in Blood of Children

by Rajashri on Sep 5 2008 3:00 PM

A study by researchers from the nonprofit Environmental Working Group has found a fire retardant chemical called polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDE in the blood of children.

This chemical is a hormone disrupting one and was found in 19 of the 20 families in this small pilot study.

Researchers from EWG said that children had three times the average of the retardant in their blood as compared to their mothers.

PBDE is dangerous to the developing brain and has been linked to hyperactivity and other behavioral issues.
