A recent study found that when parents permit their teen children to drink occasionally at home as a way to expose them to alcohol in a positive way and also to avoid them from trying out alcohol on their own, could actually have an adverse impact on the kids.

Occasional drinking at home in the company of teens could lead to alcohol problems and abuse, researchers said.
Ultimately, it is all about parents giving the right message to children. Homes where parents were strict about alcohol proved a better environment for children and helped establish expectations in the formative years.

Dr Barbara McMorris, of Minnesota University, said:"Despite the fact that peers and friends become important influences as adolescents get older, parents still have a big impact. Kids need parents to be parents and not drinking buddies. Adults need to be clear about what messages they are sending. Kids need black and white messages early on. Such messages will help reinforce limits as teens get older and opportunities to drink increase."

Ok I understand that a study was done but I came from a house where my parents allowed me to drink when I was in my teens and a little wine every holiday since I was four. I can honestly say Im happy my parents did that because I hardly drink now. My twenty first birthday I was responsible and got tipsy but not wasted because I knew my limit. I guess its how the parents approach the situation. Interesting article. :]
