Edmonton in Canada has become the first city in the country to vow to work towards a more "age-friendly" environment and to make things easier for senior citizens.

The declaration says that senior citizens will be respected, kept safe and made a priority in plans for new infrastructure.

"When people grow old, I think there is a prevalence in society to isolate seniors, to feel they have contributed and now it's past their time. This declaration is about defining their lifelong value and contribution," Coun. Linda Sloan told the Edmonton Journal.

She added that people would be encouraged to give up their seats on bus and more benches would be set up in public areas.
