Earth Day Celebrations – 2008

Earth Day is being celebrated tomorrow at a number of places including New Delhi.

It started as an occasion to express concern about the environment through the combined efforts of Governments, grassroot organizations and concerned citizens which evolved into a worldwide campaign to protect the global environment.

Various activities started from the first week of this month where more than fifty schools in National Capital Region of Delhi participated in an inter school poster making competition with the theme “Creating Awareness on Use of Public Transport”. Students also requested the people travelling in personal vehicles to opt for public transport through various campaigns. They distributed car stickers. These ongoing programmes will culminate with the celebrations of Earth Day tomorrow at National Science Center, Pargati Maidan. Audio and video clippings of Earth Week Celebrations will be demonstrated tomorrow as “Earth Day Impressions”. GREEN Olympiad Newsletter and Interactive State of Environment Atlas will be released tomorrow.

Students will present songs and will also perform skit and Earth Day pledge will be taken.

The Earth Day was originally conceived to promote onder of life on our planet in 1970 by John McConnell. Earth day now is intended create awareness about the Earth’s environment. It is held annauly during spring in the northern hemisphere and during autumn in southern hemisheres of the world.
