Drug Death Leads To Closure of China Herbal Medicine Factory
Two other patients were also taken ill after being injected with the herbal medicine produced by the Wusili River Pharmacy in Heilongjiang province, Xinhua news agency said.
China's Ministry of Health on Thursday ordered hospitals and pharmacies to suspend the use and sales of "Shuanghuanglian" produced by the Wusili factory, the report said.
The herbal medicine is normally used to treat fevers and coughs caused by the common cold, it said.
Over 240 workers at the factory in Jiamusi city were put out of work due to the shutdown, it added.
Bans and recalls of drug products are common in China due to widespread safety problems in the nation's chaotic, under-regulated and often corrupt health industry.
The former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, was executed in 2007 for taking bribes in exchange for product safety licences.
In another recent scandal, Chinese-made herbal remedies killed at least four people in October last year.
