Researchers at the University of East Anglia have revealed that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol everyday may be able to prevent formation of gallstones.

The researchers analyzed the diets of 25,639 people over ten years and found that 267 of them developed gallstones. The researchers reported that people who drank two units of alcohol a day had their risk of developing gallstones reduced by 32%.

Gall stones are usually formed by hardened cholesterol. The theory is that alcohol does not allow cholesterol to harden and hence prevents formation of these stones.

The details of the study were presented at the Digestive Disease Week in Chicago.
