According to the report released by the Department for Transport, the number of deaths due to drink driving fell from 400 in 2008 to 380 in 2009. However the number of accidents responsible for deaths remained the same at 350.

The total number of accidents fell down by more than seven percent 8,050. Accidents involving serious injuries saw a decline by 9 percent to 1,480 while accidents involving slight injuries were 8 percent less at 10,130.

While Mike Penning expressed his happiness at the decline in drink driving accidents, the Road Safety Minister expressed his grief that a large number of people still died due to mistakes by others.

"I am encouraged by these latest figures, which show the number of drink-driving deaths falling to an all-time low. But 380 people still died because a small minority of drivers risked getting behind the wheel after drinking. We will continue to work to tackle this irresponsible minority and protect law-abiding road users", he said.
