Doctors Perform Hip Replacement Surgery in Patient With Rare Disease
Dr. N. K. Venkataramana, Vice-Chairman, BGS Global Hospitals, where the surgery as performed, said "Alkaptonuria is an autosomal recessive condition. It arises in people who have inherited two mutant genes (abnormal HGD genes) one from each parent. The worldwide incidence of alkaptonuria is 1 in 2,50,000.
He added that the incidence of the disease was rare in India. In this instance, a 57-year-old male presented at the hospital with severe pain in his left leg and restricted movements of the back; radiological examination revealed that he had a rare genetic disorder Alkaptonuria
After due consultation, a hip replacement surgery was performed at the BGS Global Hospitals.
