A doctor who had claimed that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had just two years to live since he was suffering from cancer has fled the country expressing fears that his life is in danger.
Dr Salvador Navarrete, who had treated the president 10 years ago and remained in contact with his medical team, had claimed that Chavez was suffering from an aggressive form of cancer and may not survive beyond the next two years.
Though Chavez returned from a medical check-up from Cuba claiming that he has been cured, Dr Navarrete had said in a Mexican interview that he was told by the president's family members that Chavez was suffering from an aggressive form of cancer in his pelvis.
"I'm worried that the president and those around him do not know the full magnitude of his illness given it has been handled with complete secrecy. The consequences of a fatal outcome, and the importance of informing both those who support him and those who oppose him, were the reasons that led me to tackle this delicate subject", Dr Navarrete had told Mexico's Milenio Semanal magazine.
