'Do You Have It?' Condom Campaign Launched in Andhra Pradesh

by VR Sreeraman on Jun 18 2008 3:18 PM

Telugu language actor Rajasekhar launched a new condom campaign to combat AIDS in Andhra Pradesh.

The campaign - 'Do you have it?' -- is a joint effort by the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS), the National Aids Control Organisation and state-run condom maker Hindustan Latex.

Under the new project, 50,000 condom distribution outlets will be opened in unconventional centres in the state.

"The objective of this programmes is to increase availability and accessibility of the condoms," R.V Chandravadavan, Project Director, APSACS.

Rajasekhar underpinned the need to spread AIDS awareness among the illiterate.

"We will take up the awareness campaign. We have to educate them about the ill-effects non-use of condoms. Otherwise, they fall prey to STD and reproduction related diseases," he said.

Transgenders performed a play highlighting the need to spread AIDS awareness on the occasion.

The number of people estimated to be living with HIV-AIDS in India is about 2.47 million.

Yet over 40 per cent of Indian women have not heard of AIDS, creating a dangerous combination of lack of knowledge and greater sexual activity.
