A British doctor has designed a do-it-yourself dialysis machine that resulted in preserving the life of a baby dying from kidney failure.
Dr Malcolm Coulthard from Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary built this machine in his garage after it was found that baby Millie Kelly was too small for all available NHS machines. Millie was born with gastroschisis and an operation to correct this saw her kidneys fail.
Advertisement"This machine is only being used on the tiniest, earliest babies where there is nothing else that can be done," Dr Coulthard told the Newcastle Journal newspaper. "But if we had a machine that we could use much more freely, then we would be able to deal with many more babies and have a much greater chance of saving lives."
