Complex Surgery Needed to Separate Peace and Patience
A team of expert surgeons at the Women and Child Institute of Narayana Health City in Bangalore will undertake an operation to separate Nigerian conjoined twins; Peace and Patience.
The twins were born to Emmanuel and Comfort Adugbe in September last year and share a liver and intestine. "Our preliminary investigations showed that they share a very complex internal anatomy. Their livers are fused in the midline, but have separate blood supply," said Dr Ashley LJ D’Cruz, director and senior consultant paediatric surgeon and urologist, at the Institute.

He added that the bile duct system was also shared by the twins and would need an exhaustive pre-op work-up before being divided. Doctors expect the closure of shin and muscle defects to be a challenge, but say they will use a mesh to close up the defect.

The surgery will be performed by a team of 24 medical personnel comprising doctors, nurses and operating room staff.
